Lunar Rainbow / Moonbow at night
This is a 5 second exposure at F2.8 ISO 1600 pushed around 3 stops and de-grained. The wind was howling and driving a misting rain into the camera lens, so I had to be fast. The light in the middle is the Cal Portland cement plant. To the far left is the Camelot housing development in Mojave, CA. I am standing on what one day will be a widened Camelot Boulevard, and this view will be full of houses and streetlights. This simulates what the moonbow / lunar rainbow looks like with the naked eye. The bow isn't bright enough to activate the color receptors in your eye. It's quite ghostly and surreal. I couldn't believe what I was seeing the first time I caught site of it.Earlier in the day there was a long lasting rainbow. Here is one with the sign I designed for the Mojave Chamber of Commerce. Unfortunately by the time I got into position to photograph the sign directly under the rainbow, it was gone.
